THE YELLOW WALLPAPER
Both classic gothic chiller and bold feminist parable, this adaptation of Charlotte Perkins Gillman’s The Yellow Wallpaper tells the story of a woman in the grip of post-partum depression. Separated from her newborn child to spend summer in a rented country house, she is prescribed bed-rest by her physician husband in the nursery room. Decorated with what she perceives as vile yellow wallpaper, the woman soon becomes obsessed that there are eyes and necks in the pattern, eventually breaking down and becoming convinced that there are women trapped behind the wallpaper…

The Yellow Wallpaper was adapted by Stephen Sharkey and was presented as a promenade performance in Spirit Level, in the basement of The Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, London.
